Quick Sketch: Today We Dance

Dance Illustration by Veronica Marché

Tonight I’ll be returning to dance class for the first time in over a year. A little backstory: Before I moved to Philadelphia for grad school, I was with a company, Contradiction Dance, in D.C., and I taught children’s classes in Northern Virginia. With that schedule, I was in a dance studio at least three times a week: two nights in company class with Contradiction, one night jumping around with my favorite kids at Dream in color.

I’ve been so busy with grad school that I’ve almost completely neglected dance, and now my body is starting to feel it. It literally hurts not to move. So these next eight weeks of contemporary modern classes will be a welcome release for me. Did I mention I’m terribly excited?

I love, love, love dancers and the lines they create, especially in contemporary and modern dance. I thought I’d mark this exciting little day with a quick pencil sketch of a contemporary dancer. You can see the original photo here.

FASHION VICTIM for Contradiction Dance by Veronica Marché

Eeee! It’s here!

I’m collaborating with my good friends at Contradiction Dance for their fall concert, “FASHION VICTIM.” It feels like being home again (even though we’re a couple hundred miles apart).

A little backstory: I met Kelly Mayfield (now Kelly King!) about five years ago when I was a dancer in Washington, D.C. I started going to her studio, taking her classes and found myself becoming more confident and comfortable with myself as a performer when she asked me to audition for Contradiction. It’s been a lovely, artistic friendship ever since.

When I moved to Philly last year, it was hardest to leave Contradiction behind. But thanks to technology (and Amtrak), I can still be a part of Kelly’s (and our writer/collaborator Melissa’s) creative process.

The image above is what will be on the program and all marketing materials for FASHION VICTIM. And more is to come soon. I’ll keep you posted. ;-)
